Quick Facts
Does my homeowners insurance cover my business?
Very little is protected under your HO policy. You may have a small amount of property insurance but HO is not made to protect a business. If your company operates outside of the confines of your home (and they all do even if you work from home), commercial insurance policies are designed specifically for that purpose. If you create a product or offer a professional service, your HO policy is not sufficient to protect your work/career/business/life’s goals or satisfy contractual requirements you may have entered into.
How do I know what types of coverage I need for my business?
Like most questions in insurance, “It depends” is the answer. Depending on what your operation is, number of employees, types of vehicles, payroll, and revenue, your insurance needs will vary. There are basic policies that every business owner should have and many other policies that are created for each industry and operation. It is imperative you work with an agent/broker that understands your particular industry and allow them to advise you on how you are covered and equally important how you are not covered.
What is Errors and Omissions coverage?
Errors & Omissions (E&O) and professional liability are almost synonymous. These policies are here to protect your business from suits that arise out of you or your employees negligence in the course of performing their work. In many cases this is to protect your company from financial damages you may have caused others. There are circumstances where bodily injury and property damage come into play as well. If you offer a professional service, design work, or advice of any kind this is one of your most important line items.
If Insurance is a legal contract, do I need an attorney?
You should always have an attorney for legal matters. For insurance related matters, you should have an experienced and licensed insurance professional handle them. Insurance policies are contracts and should be reviewed and negotiated by an insurance expert. There are myriad terms and conditions of insurance policies that seasoned agents and brokers can negotiate on your behalf without paying the high attorneys’ fees.
Should my business have Cyber Liability Insurance?
Yes, Yes, and Yes. There really isn’t anyone immune to cyber threats. It does not matter how large your organization is or what type of data you come across. Hackers will find a creative way to infiltrate and use this information to their advantage. Small businesses are just as at risk as the big companies. In fact, it is easier for data miners to get into a small company's system and work their way up than it is to start at the top.
